Read from employers’ own career pages and public job boards in Ohio (and remote); changes daily. The Blade itself is left out.

Your first week

  1. File for unemployment right away. Benefits usually count from the week you apply. Find your state’s unemployment office.
  2. Read your separation paperwork before you sign. Note your last day, final pay, severance, unused vacation and the deadline to decide.
  3. Sort out health insurance. Ask HR about COBRA, and compare plans on HealthCare.gov: losing work coverage opens a special enrollment window.
  4. Ask for references and LinkedIn recommendations now, while your work is fresh in people’s minds.
  5. Take stock before you apply everywhere. The 2-minute fit check above is a start; Aptly’s full assessments (about 40 minutes in all, nothing is graded) show which roles fit you, including ones your experience wouldn’t have pointed to, and who’s hiring for them near you.

Layoff details come from public WARN Act notices filed with state workforce agencies and published reports. Aptly is not affiliated with The Blade. Openings come from employers’ career pages and public job boards. The fit check uses items from the O*NET Interest Profiler (U.S. Department of Labor, CC BY 4.0); it is career exploration, not a hiring test.
